"The first place to start with literacy is getting children reading for pleasure"
The ability to read, whether fact or fiction, is a crucial part of learning at all levels. If you can engender in a child a love of the written word then you are helping to prepare them to understand, investigate, empathise and question the world around them for the rest of their life. One of the first people outside a child's family that will actively try and instill a love of reading in children is a school librarian.
In this post we have an interview with Anne Hayman, a school librarian who's own love of reading and dedication has helped the pupils of St Josephs RC Comprehensive develop a passion for reading for pleasure.-
" If I've had a new delivery I have to hide it, they are there, pulling the books out..."
They are sometimes too excited about books even for her! You can listen to the interview she gave in our 'Reading Matters' feature alongside the pupil's interviews about the books they wanted to win and their thoughts about the shadowing process [the recordings were made by Bethan O'Donnell, a Yr 11 pupil at the school) or you can read about their experience in the South Wales Argus.
